Crisis of governance or morals!

September 27, 2020 00:00:00

Mobile talk-time vanishes fast and data purchased for using internet with smartphone finishes before the expiry date. About one third money of the prepaid electricity is slashed when it is recharged while phantom electricity bills have been such a common story. Standing bus passengers are charged the fare fixed for sitting passengers. It takes Tk 1,800 to send Tk 100,000 through mobile banking, compared to only Tk 50 through normal banking! Adulteration is almost a common practice in the market.

This is what many of the Bangladeshis have to face every day. What should be blamed for this state of things - people's moral degradation or the crisis of governance? Whatever is the case, the reality is we have hardly any remedy for this helpless situation. Of course, some people collaborate with the system while the silent majority has resigned to accepting the reality. As a result, all complaints are not lodged with the authorities concerned. Many are indifferent to suchmalpractices. Therefore, the state of economic governance is not what one would think it is.
