Cyclone Hamoon has wreaked havoc in Cox's Bazar and Chattogram. Its strong winds uprooted many utility poles and snapped the power supply lines in these areas. The residents have been facing a complete blackout for around four days, with no power, mobile phone network, internet, or telephone connections. The situation in neighbouring areas such as Maheskhali and Banskhali in Chattogram is also tragic. According to the media, four died as trees fell on them while another died in a house collapse. The cyclone has reportedly damaged at least 15,067 houses in Chattogram and Cox's Bazar while more than 150 electric poles falling down. Vehicular movement has remained suspended in many areas for uprooted trees. Meanwhile, PalliBidyut authorities said that at least 10 more days would pass before normalising the power supply in the affected areas. If there is no electricity for such a long period, people of these vast areas will go through untold sufferings. Currently, due to a lack of electricity, a severe drinking water crisis is now going on in these areas. Also, mobile phone networks are often down due to the power outage.
Those who have lost their houses by this cyclone are now in a difficult situation. Hundreds of them are in need of food support and safe drinking water. Moreover, many families are struggling to build a roof. In such a situation, the authorities concerned need to adequately and extensively attend to the needs of the people. Effective relief and rehabilitation efforts can help the affected to cope with the situation.
