Danger of drug abuse

The curse of drug abuse is widespread now. It is a harsh reality. Though its fatal consequence is known to all, there are few effective steps to mitigate the social disease. Even the law-enforcement agencies find it difficult to curb the abuse of drugs. It is, however, not only a law and order problem. There is a big business behind drug abuse. Various quarters are beneficiaries of the illicit trade. A section of leaders and activists of the political party in power is involved. Involvement of some members of the law-enforcement agency is also there. So, it has become more challenging to curb the illicit trade in drugs and drug abuse.

Commitment of the community is necessary to eradicate the abuse of drugs. Concerted efforts of all the government and non-government entities concerned are also important. Political will is also needed to support the community effort. Otherwise, protecting the younger generation, particularly students, from drug addiction will not be possible. Instead, there will be a rise in social crime and illegal activities. It is time to act together.
