Dangerous race on roads

A female student was ejected from a bus on the Dhaka-Narayanganj highway in Dania area on Tuesday. She somehow managed to escape but once she tried to protest, the bus just ran away. The student's helpless moment was captured in a photograph published by a Bangla daily with caption 'Anarchy on the roads' on Wednesday. The incident took place on the national road safety day, when the Prime Minister asked the authorities concerned to stop unhealthy race on the roads to avert road accidents. Sheikh Hasina reportedly made a renewed call upon all including pedestrians and drivers to properly follow traffic rules to avoid road accidents.
It is unfortunate that there is no improvement in road safety despite instructions from the highest level of the government. Thousands of people died on the roads due mostly to reckless driving and tens of thousands of others were injured in accidents over the past decade. This has also made lives of survivors and their families miserable. After so much of public outcry for ensuring safe roads, we can only hope that the situation would improve in the coming days.
