Dealing with cooking oil crisis

May 20, 2022 00:00:00

Everyone knows about the current crisis of cooking oil in Bangladesh. A recent record hike in the price of soybean oil has made many of us ponder how we can cope up with the situation. One of the main solutions to this is reducing consumption of oil in preparing our food items because oils like soybean are not healthy for the heart. On the other hand, the government's monitoring system needs to be strengthened so that people can buy oil at the prices fixed by the government.

The authorities should also handle the artificial oil crisis created by unscrupulous traders with an iron hand. Until oil market normalises, full-time duty-free import of edible oil should be allowed in the interest of low-income people. We must come away from our dependence on imported cooking oil because it is a suicidal decision for any country to depend entirely on import. There should be a policy on how we can produce cooking oil in our own country. But until then, people should be more cautious and frugal in their use of oil.
