Dealing with rice hoarders, syndicate

October 28, 2020 00:00:00

Rice is our staple food. We hardly can survive without it. But when the prices of rice go beyond the purchasing capacity of common people, their survival becomes difficult.

According to the government, there is no shortage of supply; yet prices of rice are on the rise. Within a week, prices of fine rice have increased by Tk 2 to 3 per kilogram in retail markets.

We often see in the media that a hoarding syndicate is behind the rice price spiral. One of the main reasons behind this hoarding syndicate, in my eyes, is that the government does not have any specific information on the paddy grown in the country. And for this, the authorities cannot monitor the hoarding syndicate.

In the middle, the low and middle income consumers suffer a lot because of the rising prices of the staple food.

We hope the authorities will take measures to bring prices under control by pulling back the reins of the syndicate.
