It has been reported that the government is mulling over amending the existing law against rapists to include death penalty as the highest punishment. Understandably, such move followed the ongoing protests against the increasing number of rape incidents in the country and due to the demand from some people in this regard.
However, as society and the country will exist beyond the lifespan of this generation, we should think about long-term effects of any actions taken today. It's hard to believe death penalty would be a panacea for the curse of rape, which is the outcome of evil thinking and wrong upbringing of a few. Some perpetrators fearing capital punishment may try to kill the victim to destroy evidence. Also, death penalty maybe a miscarriage of justice in some cases.
In fact, proper enforcement of existing laws, improving law and order situation, social resistance against any evil act and educating people may be an effective response to the issue of rape. Respect for women should be made into a culture so that society is rid of the propensity for such crimes.
