It is alarming that the students of our country have been losing their interests in science-based subjects day by day. It is surely not a good sign. If our country lags behind in science, it will only hamper our progress. Without mastering science and technology, we cannot expect to go far in the current world situation. Where every other country is encouraging their young generation to pursue science-based subjects, we are simply apathetic to it.
Gradually the number of science students is decreasing. The Education Ministry should take necessary steps to encourage our students to study in science group. Good teachers, laboratories and other facilities are needed for that. Many meritorious students don't study in science group as it is a costlier affair. We should remember that the decline in science education is also hurting our economy and contributing to the shortage in skilled hands. The country's largest revenue earning Ready Made Garments sector is now also experiencing 25 per cent skill gap while chemical industries are also reporting difficulties in finding qualified engineers. So, many industries are employing foreigners. It is high time we pondered over this pressing issue.
