Declining child marriage in Bangladesh
July 23, 2014 00:00:00
The world is praising Bangladesh for reducing child marriage. Bangladesh has well tackled this problem to a great extent and it is hoped that in the future the child marriage will cease to exist. Due to spread of education followed by stringent vigilance by the government, early marriage has decreased in the country. Now we have to step up our effort so that we can achieve complete triumph over this curse.
Child marriage is a social curse which hampers the healthy growth of girls as they become mothers early and chances of child death becoming more likely. We cannot achieve desired social and economic progress keeping our womenfolk backward. Child marriage robs girl of their opportunity to become a healthy and strong adult. They also lose their childhood innocence and get burdened by the adult responsibility at a tender age.
Lack of education, insecurity and abject poverty are the prime reasons for the prevalence of child marriage in society. When a girl gets married at an early age, she cannot complete her studies and she is more susceptible to death or injury during childbirth than adult women. The government initiatives of preventing child marriage are praiseworthy. We need to provide more opportunity for our girl children so that they too can march forward with the rest of the nation.
