Lyricist, director, producer and screenplay writer Gazi Mazharul Anwar passed away on Sunday. With this, the curtain falls on a legend of Bengali music. He started his career as a lyricist at Radio Pakistan in 1964. In 1965, he stepped into the newly emerging film industry in Dhaka. In 1971, he became a freedom fighter by joining 'Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra.' The patriotic songs transmitted from that radio centre inspired millions of Bengalees in the war of independence against Pakistan. After the liberation of Bangladesh, Gazi Mazhar played a leading role in the country's cultural advancement. He worked with famous singers like Shahnaz Rahmatullah, Syed Abdul Hadi, Sabina Yasmin, Runa Laila, Andrew Kishore, Subir Nandi, Khurshid Alam, Kanak Chapa and many others.

In addition, songwriters like Alauddin Ali, Anwar Prvej and Satya Saha added melody to his lyrics. Gazi Mazhar's evergreen songs include Joy Bangla Banglar Joy, Ektara Tui Desher Kotha, Ekbar Jete De Na, Bondhu Tin Din Tor Barite Gelam, Akasher Haathe Achhe, Achen Amar Muktar, Shudhu Gaan Geye Porichoy , Monero Ronge Rangabo, Dukkho Korona and Ei Prithibir Pore. Gazi Mazharul Anwar will live forever through these unique Bangladeshi songs.
