Depression and anxiety in teenagers

Mental health is important for all as it influences how people think, talk and behave. People sometimes do not even know that they are depressed or are anxious. Some people even think that having depression and anxiety is shameful, that they will be shunned by society if the word gets out. As a result, they do not feel comfortable to talk about it.
Now-a-days mental disorders are affecting children especially teenagers. Nearly, 20 per cent of teenagers experience depression before even reaching adulthood. This increases the likelihood of suicidal attempts in them by 12 times more than the same in adults.
Depression has serious consequences. It is not something that can be overcome with sheer will power. Sometime it causes permanent damage. There are lots of reasons behind depression including hormonal problems, early childhood trauma, inherited traits and also negative thought patterns. These problems affect self-esteem in teenagers. Despite facing these problems, they can hardly tell others due to lack of knowledge and awareness.
To prevent mental health problems in their pupils, schools and colleges can appoint guidance counsellors with degrees and specialisation in psychology. Students can talk to these professionals frankly about their problems and get the most effective solutions.
Seminars about teenage mental health problems can also generate awareness.
