An important route in Dhaka, the Kamalapur Bypass, is now experiencing extreme traffic congestion. The closure of various lanes for metro rail and other infrastructure development projects has made the situation worse. The problem has been made much worse by the six-month shutdown of one lane on the Kamalapur-TT Para road.
This route is used by thousands of vehicles, including private cars, buses, and goods carriers, every day. However, there are now long lines of cars due to the ongoing development work and the absence of suitable routes. In particular, the traffic gets really bad during school and office hours. The congestion leads to longer commutes, increased fuel consumption, and greater stress on drivers and passengers.
Under these conditions, commuters and locals are suffering immensely. Businesses dependent on timely deliveries are also facing disruptions, while emergency services, such as ambulances, struggling to reach their destinations in time. Additionally, the vehicles trapped in traffic jams contribute significantly to air pollution, worsening the health risks for city dwellers.
Regarding the development projects' goal of improving the city's transport system, the authorities must create efficient diversion choices and put plans in place to lessen traffic problems. Enhanced traffic management, the establishment of temporary alternative routes, and better communication with the public about project timelines are essential. To lessen the strain on Dhaka's citizens and ensure easier mobility across the city, immediate action is required.
