Diarrhoea outbreak in remote Bandarban
July 18, 2022 00:00:00
An increasing number of diarrhoea cases suggest that remote areas of Bandarban are at risk of a major outbreak. At least 11 people have reportedly died from diarrhoea in the district and more than 100 have been seriously affected by the disease so far. These areas are inaccessible and completely without mobile phone network. At this time of the year, the people there are afflicted with water-borne diseases, including diarrhoea that usually kills one or two people every year. But this time it has spread widely. Most people in remote areas use Jhiri and Chhara water for drinking. When it rains, these waters become polluted and drinking these waters causes diarrhoea and water-borne diseases.
Local markets of this region have already run out of necessary medicines and oral saline which has dealt a further blow to the affected communities. So, we urge the authorities concerned to immediately send necessary medicines, water purification tablet and oral saline to the areas reeling from diarrhoea.
