Digital divide in the name of 4G
March 15, 2018 00:00:00
A few days ago the mobile phone operators of Bangladesh launched 4th generation (4G) mobile network technology with pomp and grandeur. But the most unfortunate news that we hear now is that it will take three more years to bring the entire country under the 4G coverage. For the time being, the facility will remain limited to Dhaka and some big cities only.
Nevertheless, the mobile operators have been advertising vigorously through the print and electronic media for 4G SIM replacement with an extra charge. They are making money illegally and doing mockery with the general subscribers by way of creating a sort of digital divide.
Honestly speaking, I think a balanced and standard 2G facility is yet to be ensured in all parts of the country. In such a situation, we would request the government to direct the mobile operators to pay due attention to ensure a balanced 2G coverage first in all areas across the country and only then then to concentrate on 4G.
