Dilapidated roads of our capital

December 28, 2014 00:00:00

Roads of our Dhaka city are generally in a dilapidated condition and as a result we have to face a perpetual traffic jam almost everywhere. Dhaka City was divided into two city corporations presumably to improve services and reduce sufferings of the inhabitants. But sadly, instead of improvement we see deterioration in all spheres of urban life. We see leakage in water supply pipes resulting in water loss and leakage in sewerage pipes spreading polluted drain waters on the city streets.

One should visit Mouchak-Moghbazar road to see what a nightmarish condition people of the adjoining areas are living in. Why are the city corporations not playing their roles properly, is surprising to say the least. How could they remain so indifferent for days together? If the roads of our city are left in conditions as they are in now, it will have a duplicating effect on days to come. Dhaka is a mega city of 16 million people and compared to its size, it has a higher rate of population already. Pressure of population is increasing day by day and the government should seriously plan to shift part of the load to somewhere out of the capital. Otherwise, our capital will become unliveable.
