IT is a matter of great pride for us that 21st February was recognised as the International Mother Language Day by the UNESCO. This was possible due to the supreme sacrifice of the language martyrs. But it is a matter of great regret that some FM radio stations have been using distorted Bangla pronunciations and disgracing our language. Their anchors encourage the young audiences to follow the distorted pronunciations. They call it Banglish -- a mixture of Bangla and English which is followed by a section of young people.
Despite being clearly mentioned in our constitution for correct use of Bangla pronunciations everywhere and a specific instruction by the High Court to this effect, wrong and distorted pronunciations are being used indiscriminately. The government should intervene in this matter and appropriate steps should be taken against continued and deliberate use of distorted Bangla pronunciations by a group of broadcasters and FM radio channels.
