Don't hike water price

August 12, 2022 00:00:00

Amid the increased economic struggles of people, the price of supply water in the capital city is also set to see a sharp rise after Dhaka WASA proposed a 20 per cent hike in tariffs. If the government approves it, it will cause a big dent on the residents' wallet. At a time when people are struggling to cope with the current economic pain and adjust their budget to skyrocketing inflation, the WASA (Water Supply and Sewerage Authority) proposal has come to us as a big shock.

As per law, the Dhaka WASA can raise water price by 5.0 per cent annually and that requires an approval of its board. Despite knowing this, DWASA authorities are trying to increase tariffs excessively. The proposal for a water price hike is especially troubling at a time when fuel oil price has just been hiked as much as 51 per cent. If water price is hiked, pressure will rise on the fixed-income people. People are already struggling with the rising costs of living. This should not be the time to compound their sufferings further by raising supply water price. We urge the authorities concerned to consider this sincerely and not to forward the proposal.
