Drug trade under maximum security

April 08, 2014 00:00:00

It may seem strange that one of the strong venues of illegal drug trade is free from any surveillance, located within the secure walls of the two main jails in the country. These are the Dhaka Central Jail in the capital and the Kashimpur Central Jail in Gazipur. Drugs like heroin, yaba and cannabis are all readily available inside these jails, if one has the connections and the money.

This writer feels that the police will not react to the newspaper report published on April 7. It doesn't bother them at all and they will take no action on the basis of a published report. It is not understood what actually is needed to make them sit up and take action. Understandably, it is a wide network involving many stakeholders that allows the trading to thrive uninterrupted.

As a humble citizen, I appeal to the High Court to initiate directives so that the authorities, including the law enforcers, are brought to task for not taking any action against the gang of culprits, right under their nose. Since there is no other recourse, it is the highest court of the land that may consider doing the needful to bring an end to this nefarious drug trade.
