It was disappointing to note that the election commission has failed to stay firm on its decision to deploy the army during city elections. Keeping the army in barracks during the elections does not actually serve the purpose for which its deployment is intended. Many believe that the EC had taken this decision because of the undue pressure from the ruling party. Such a move by the EC has again proved that it is not playing its role impartially. I hope the EC will change its decision and the army will be deployed during the city elections so that the voters can freely exercise their voting rights. Common people expect the EC to play its due role and maintain the neutrality and integrity of the institution. Without adequate security arrangement the voters will not go to the polling centres and their turnout will not be satisfactory to say the least. If the city elections are not held in a free and fair manner, it will destabilise the political situation again which is not expected by anyone. The election commission must not forget that this election is very important to ensure peace and political stability in the country and therefore it should play its role efficiently and impartially.
