The cyclone "Hood Hood" that swept through coastal areas around Orissa and Maharastra in India deserves proper attention of our policy makers. One could watch over TV how electricity distribution pillars and pylons were uprooted and electricity conducting wires were just hanging like kites. Many of the electricity distribution lines within Dhaka City are non-insulted or bare conductors. If wet ropes, sarees, dopattas etc. come into contact with these live wires, disasters like explosions, fire and human casualty may happen. Bare non-insulted conductors are not at all safe. At regular intervals we hear a big bang in our area and electricity goes off because of faulty electrical distribution system. Even many of our locally produced household electrical wares, switches and other items are not properly checked using quality control practice. The authorities should look into the matter of electricity distribution system.
