Embankments require urgent renovation

August 27, 2024 00:00:00

The embankments along the Muhuri River in Feni district are in a state of disrepair, presenting a critical threat to the safety and livelihood of the residents in the surrounding areas. Despite the vital role these embankments play in flood prevention, their current condition is grossly inadequate, leading to repeated and devastating inundations, particularly in Parashuram and Fulgazi upazilas. Over the past two months alone, these regions have been ravaged by floods three times, each event severely disrupting public life and exacerbating the hardships faced by local communities.

From August 2 to 5, the situation deteriorated further as floodwaters breached the embankments at some ten locations. This breach not only intensified the flooding but also highlighted the urgent need for renovation and reinforcement of these structures.

Despite the severity of the damage, no substantial repairs have been carried out, leaving the embankments vulnerable to future breaches and the residents at continued risk.

It is crucial that the authorities concerned recognise the urgency of the situation and take immediate and decisive action to repair and reinforce the embankments along the Muhuri River. This is not a matter of routine maintenance but a critical intervention that will determine the safety and well-being of thousands of people. The repeated flooding in Parashuram and Fulgazi upazilas is a clear indication that the current flood control measures are insufficient. Without prompt action, these communities will continue to suffer, and the cycle of destruction and rebuilding will go on, leaving the people precariously vulnerable to the whim of nature.
