Ensure justice in DU sexual abuse case

The grave allegations against Professor Ershad Halim of the Department of Chemistry at the University of Dhaka have shaken the very foundations of the education system. Students of the department have filed a case, and the police have arrested the accused professor-an important initial step towards justice. Yet the main concern remains ensuring a fair, transparent and uncompromising investigation into these allegations. The experiences described by the victims-sexual abuse, rape, psychological torment and physical harassment-are not merely unacceptable; they constitute serious crimes and a direct assault on human dignity.
Anyone found guilty of perpetrating such horrific acts against students must face the strictest punishment. Exemplary and decisive justice is essential to send a clear message and prevent future abuses of authority within academic institutions.
Authorities must prioritise the safety and psychological well-being of the victims. Their identities must be protected, counselling support provided and proper legal assistance ensured throughout the proceedings. Simultaneously, strengthening the university's sexual harassment prevention cell and empowering it with real authority is an urgent necessity.
The administrative structure of the university must foster an environment where students can file complaints without fear, intimidation, or institutional pressure. Teacher recruitment and promotion processes also require stricter ethical and behavioral screening to prevent individuals with abusive tendencies from holding positions of trust.
A campus must be created where every student can pursue education free from fear, exploitation and coercion-especially from those entrusted to guide and protect them. Justice must prevail and justice must be visible.
