Ensure quick punishment for rapists

February 13, 2024 00:00:00

The court has sentenced 10 people to death and 6 to life imprisonment in the gang-rape incident that took place in Noakhali's Subarnachar on election day in 2018. District Judge Fatema Ferdous of Noakhali Women and Child Torture Prevention Tribunal-2 announced the verdict recently. In the observation of the judgment, it is stated that such crimes not only affect the victimised women but also the state itself. We welcome the verdict.

It is hoped that the appeals will be disposed of at the earliest and the verdicts would be executed. Since harassment of women and children is increasingly alarmingly, the need for speedy trial and punishment for culprits has become all the more important. When the rapists will be handed down exemplary punishment, heinous crimes like sexual harassment of women will be reduced to a great extent. Besides, the government must be extremely careful so that no one can commit crimes by abusing their political clout.
