Ensure transparency in port management
November 25, 2025 00:00:00
Recent discussions about the proposed involvement of Danish and Swedish companies in managing Chattogram's Laldia Terminal and Dhaka's Pangaon facility have drawn considerable public attention. As the country's principal gateway for international trade, the Chattogram Port holds immense economic and strategic significance. In many parts of the world, foreign investment and technical collaboration in port operations are widely practised to introduce modern technology, strengthen management efficiency and improve global competitiveness.
Even so, opinions remain divided. Supporters view foreign participation as an opportunity to enhance efficiency, transparency and international connectivity. Critics, on the other hand, raise valid concerns about allowing strategic infrastructure to be managed by external entities. Both perspectives deserve careful and balanced consideration.
Decisions concerning national ports must prioritise long-term economic interests as well as national security. Transparent feasibility studies, expert evaluations and open access to relevant information are essential to strengthen public confidence. At the same time, constructive engagement with workers and other stakeholders is necessary to avoid misunderstandings and prevent unnecessary disruptions.
Bangladesh's aspirations for port modernisation and economic progress are both timely and important. Achieving these goals, however, depends on informed debate, responsible governance and decision-making grounded in transparency.
