Ensuring adequate safety for all workers

EVER SINCE industrial revolution hit the world, focus shifted from agriculture to industry and people have been migrating to towns and cities from villages. Although rate of exodus was initially slow in our country, it started to accelerate with growing industrialisation and urbanisation. Majority of these rural migrants with no education or working experience were hired to perform hardworking and hazardous jobs in factories and other commercial establishments. Even today migrant workers from villages are found landing on arduous and risk-bearing jobs where deaths from accidents are frequent.
These deaths do not occur due to ignorance of the workers alone, inadequate or lack of safety arrangements is also equally responsible. In most places proper safety devices are not found in place for the workers. Even government projects involving these workers as labourers are found lacking safety arrangements. Employers, be it a government or a private organisation, must ensure first of all proper safety for the workers. People are considered as great assets for a country and they should not be exposed undue risks and hazards. I sincerely hope that the Prime Minister will issue necessary instructions to ensure proper safety arrangements for all workers.
