The tragic incident resulting in the loss of 46 lives due to a fire in a building on Bailey Road in Dhaka last Thursday night is deeply shocking. While fires are not uncommon, the loss of nearly fifty lives is exceptionally distressing. Despite the presence of eight restaurants spanning seven floors in the building, reports indicate a lack of adequate fire safety measures. Furthermore, it is alarming to learn that three notices warning of potential dangers were issued to the building authorities, yet no action was taken. Such negligence on the part of the building authorities can be considered a grave oversight and tantamount to structural negligence.
Ensuring public safety falls within the purview of the state and relevant agencies. However, one must question their responsibility in light of the repeated warnings issued. Shouldn't irregularities identified during routine inspections and genuine oversight be met with appropriate repercussions? Following such a tragic incident, is it not imperative for the state to take decisive action?
Fire accidents occur in other countries as well, but with increased awareness, the loss of life and property is minimised. Strengthening fire prevention measures in restaurants and factories can significantly reduce the occurrence of such accidents. Additionally, users of buildings should receive adequate training in fire safety protocols. Construction of buildings must adhere strictly to regulations, with comprehensive fire safety plans and evacuation systems in place.
Moreover, it is essential for relevant government departments to conduct regular inspections and oversight to ensure compliance with safety standards. Only through collaborative efforts can we mitigate the risks associated with fire incidents.
