Ensuring proper education for tea workers' children
August 28, 2022 00:00:00
It is now difficult for common people to survive due to the skyrocketing prices of essentials. One wonders how a tea worker can keep body and soul together with the wage of only Tk 120 per day. Yes, they can do so by having rice only for supper. Most often, they cannot afford egg or fish with their meagre salary. Most of them cannot afford proper education for their children and accommodation, healthcare and other daily necessities for their families with their wages.
Most of the tea garden workers cannot send their children to secondary schools, let alone colleges and universities. High schools are located far away from the tea gardens so their children cannot access those. And secondary education is not free. There are expenditures for books and tuition, which most tea workers cannot afford. Before completing their secondary education, most tea workers' children have to join the tea garden as a worker. As a result, the lives of tea garden workers remain confined to the labourers' quarters of the tea estates for generations. This cannot go on forever. The situation must change. And the children of tea workers must be provided with the scope for proper education so that they can become important human resources for Bangladesh.
