Errant law enforcers and silent extortion

April 22, 2014 00:00:00

Recently, the errant members of law enforcing agencies have created panic in the mind of the common people. They, in the name of arresting criminals, detain students or small traders and realise extortion from them. These incidents have been decreasing the level of faith of the common people on the law enforcers.

"The police are the friends of the common people" - this slogan is mere rhetoric. In reality, the common people stay away from the law enforcers. Recently, one of my acquaintances who stays in Dhaka in order to study in a reputed private university, was picked up from his residence allegedly by the Detective Branch of Police. Later, they took him out and threatened him that if he didn't pay taka 50,000, they would kill him in crossfire or put him in serious trouble. He was so terrified that he brought money from his village home instantly. Such incident is harming the image of the government. These must be stopped immediately and the offenders should face strict punishment.
