Exit of GSK, SANOFI

November 21, 2019 00:00:00

UK-based research-oriented pharmaceutical company GSK ended its Bangladesh journey in 2018 after over six decades of operation. French pharmaceutical company SANOFI is following suit, also after serving 60 years of operation.

Bangladesh is currently exporting medicines to more than 151 countries. Despite growth of the sector in the past two decades, foreign pharmaceuticals could not cope up with the changing situation. Medicine is a different kind of business and departure of the two foreign companies does not give a good message to international business community about our business environment.

Our pharmaceutical companies need to invest more in research and raising quality of medicine. Our physicians deserve freedom to prescribe medicine in generic names instead of referring to brands of each company. It is high time that the government took necessary steps to strengthen research and ensure required quality of medicine.
