Exploring our own gas reserves

April 13, 2022 00:00:00

Gas crisis is not a new issue in Bangladesh. We have for long been facing this problem. The country's industrial sector is the worst victim of this crisis. It has not only reduced production in the industrial sector, but has also created major problems for cooking in many homes during the fasting month of Ramadan. The main reason behind this is that we are now over-dependent on imported liquefied natural gas than exploring our own gas fields. A multi-client survey in the sea to explore gas has been in talks since 2015 but it has not been done yet.

Experts believe that we have more gas reserves underground and under the sea. More exploration is needed to take advantage of this. It looks like the policymakers have taken the wrong policy of importing LNG instead of exploring. Thus the energy sector has become increasingly dependent on other countries. The price of LNG has already gone up. To solve the gas problem, we need to focus on exploring new gas fields and extracting gas.
