Winter in Bangladesh, though cherished by some, brings severe hardship for many underprivileged people. While the affluent can buy warm clothes to shield themselves from the cold, the poor and homeless bear the brunt of the season's harshness. Railway lines, footpaths, slums, and bus stands are home to countless people who struggle to stay warm, wrapping themselves in thin lungis or towels. Street children, shivering in the biting cold, lack even the basic necessities to endure the season.
In rural areas, farmers and other low-income groups labour through thick fog and freezing temperatures to sustain their livelihoods. Despite their essential contributions to society, their struggles often go unnoticed. Similarly, the urban homeless, living under open skies or in abandoned spaces, fight daily battles for survival against the cold.
It is our moral responsibility as a society to stand by these individuals in their time of need. We must ensure the distribution of adequate winter clothing, particularly to the homeless and street children, who suffer the most.
Farmers and labourers, who are the backbone of our economy, deserve our care and support during this challenging season.
Media can play a pivotal role by highlighting the plight of these vulnerable groups, encouraging public awareness and action. Financial institutions, NGOs, and public-private partnerships can also contribute significantly by organising donation drives and providing essential resources.
Winter should not be a season of misery for anyone. As human beings, it is our duty to stand in solidarity with those less fortunate. Let us all come together to extend warmth and kindness, ensuring that no one is left to face the cold alone.
