Eid-ul Azha is just four days away. Every year thousands of animals are sacrificed on this day. It is a day when the poor and needy get a share of meat from the sacrificed animals.
A government report has revealed that a total of 12 million cows, buffaloes, goats and sheep were slaughtered during last year's Eid-ul Azha. Most people donate their sacrificial animal's rawhide to orphanages. These play a big role to meet their yearly expenses. But now the market of rawhide is very low. Not very long back, rawhide of a cow used to sell for Tk 4,000 to Tk 5,000. But now, it is being sold between Tk 500 to Tk 1000! Traders and tanners manipulate the prices for rawhide and skins of sacrificial animals ahead of Eid-ul Azha. The government should break this nexus so that orphanages get their due price and can run their institutions smoothly.
