Family planning in rural Bangladesh

January 27, 2021 00:00:00

Rapid population growth in resource-constrained countries like Bangladesh hampers the ability to develop the quality of life and livelihoods. In this case, family planning is the only method which can contribute to fertility decline. It has to be admitted that fertility has fallen substantially since the introduction of contraceptive use as a means of family planning in the country. However, the decline is uneven as the performance of family planning programmes varies differently from urban areas to villages.

The rate of illiteracy and superstition is still high in rural life. Rural people apparently do not mind having many children in families despite the fact that they are not capable of looking after them properly. Superstitions are so deep-rooted among many of the villagers that they do not want to use contraceptives, saying that this goes against their religious beliefs. According to Bangladesh population policy, it is better not to have more than two children. But, the rural people are still unaware of the fact. So, there are no other alternatives than making these people aware of the importance of family planning and improving their quality of life.
