Fighting juvenile delinquency

The crimes committed by teenagers are increasing day by day in Bangladesh. According to a recent survey, around 500 adolescent crime cases are filed every year across the country. The study also shows that the number of active teenage gangs in Dhaka city is over 78 now and this number is growing at an alarming rate. The number of such gang members is more than 2,000. There are many reasons behind these crimes. Of them, abuses of smartphones and internet technology, poverty, absence of playground, a lack of social values are some of them that we need to focus on.
If we can take measures to improve basic education and health services, eradicate child labour, provide allowances for the poor families and accelerate the food for education programme on a large scale, we will be able to rein in teenage crimes. Moreover, creation of social awareness about the negative effects of drug addiction, social media and internet is needed. Moral education should also be taught in all educational institutions. More importantly, parents and families should be aware of teenage crimes and closely monitor their children's activities.
