Flyovers of Dhaka city

April 02, 2018 00:00:00

I fully endorse the views expressed by Shahiduzzaman Khan in his write-up on separate VIP lane which appeared in your newspaper on March 29, 2018. It is a well written piece on a current issue. While highlighting the uselessness of a separate VIP Lane Mr. Khan also made some observations on our city roads. Here I would like to add a few points to explain some visible faults of the existing flyovers in the city. One of the principal objectives behind construction of the flyovers was to reduce traffic jam and facilitate movement from one place to another in the city.

Sadly, instead of doing so, the flyovers have added to our miseries. Traffic jam on Mohakhali flyover is a common sight in peak hours. The flyover has neither gone to Gulshan nor has it connected Mohakhali bus terminal on its way. Someone bound for Kamlapur-Sayedabad way after crossing Khilgaon flyover cannot turn to Shajahanpur-Rajarbagh route. Similarly, Jatrabari-Gulistan flyover has no turning points in old Dhaka to drop passengers either at Wari-Narida or Nawabpur-Bangshal or Dayaganj-Gendaria route. People of these areas are thus being deprived of the benefit of this flyover. The overpass in front of Engineers Institute opposite the Ramna Park is used by very few commuters. Similarly, Gulistan underpass is also used by too few commuters. The authority concerned should look into the matter and identify the designing faults of the flyovers, overpass and underpass and take appropriate steps to avoid these shortcomings in future planning.
