Finally, the Dhaka City Corporation (South) has opened the playground at Dhanmondi-8 to members of the public. We thank the government for taking the step as it will discourage land grabbers from taking such moves to occupy vacant lands meant for sports in future. The Dhanmondi playground has created bitterness between the officials of the Sheikh Jamal Club and noted environmentalists backed by the common people and media. The environmentalists along with the common people were staging demonstrations for a long time demanding opening of the playground for everybody. Earlier, the club officials closed all the gates of the playground to the common people. Finally, the common people have got access to the Dhanmondi playground.
We hope the environmentalists will not stop here and go ahead with agitation to recover all the playgrounds of Dhaka from the clutches of the influential people. The media can play an important role here and can publish reports on the open fields facing the fate of the Dhanmondi playground. The power of the people is unlimited when they are united for a good cause. Our children must have open places where they can run, play and pass leisure time.
Sports contribute to the cognitive, physical, social, and emotional development of children and youths. So, it is high time we recover all the grabbed playgrounds in our city.
