It is heartening to learn that the government has no plans to restore power of the DCs in applying the controversial provision of the Printing Presses and Publication Act of 1973. It relates to the DCs' power to cancel newspaper declaration. Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu's statement made to the parliamentary standing committee on the Ministry of Information has removed our deep concern.
We look at the decision as a wise one. A free press is an eye opener of the government as well as the members of the public. Media always played significant roles in all crucial times of our national life.
