Future of automobile industry in Bangladesh
September 18, 2021 00:00:00
The automobile industry in Bangladesh is not big. According to an estimate, the size of the industry is approximately US$100 million or Tk 8,500 million. The industry is, however, growing gradually in the country. The demand for cars is always there and it is increasing now. But due to higher taxes or duties on import, many people cannot afford a private car. But a private car is no more luxury in the country.
As economy is expanding, investment is also there to produce automobiles locally. It was expected that by the end of 2021, Bangladesh will produce first ever "Made in Bangladesh" car. Due to the pandemic situation, it may be delayed. Media report also said that Bangladesh will start manufacturing Mitsubishi cars by 2025. Thus, time has come to step up a new era of creative manufacturing. In order to do so, we need proper research and development rather than just copying foreign brands. Bangladesh needs to put effort on making unique cars. By doing so, a country brand will be established in the future. People will also start buying Bangladeshi cars instead of paying higher taxes on imported ones.
