House rent in Dhaka city has been rising, and it seems there is no one to monitor it. With this has increased the tyranny of house owners. For a middle class family with limited income it is extremely difficult find a suitable house in Dhaka city. The government should take some measures to bring relief to the sufferings of the tenants. It is heartening to learn that the National Board of Revenue has decided to increase monitoring the house owners in Dhaka city. It is surprising that despite having a house in the city many house owners do not pay taxes nor do they have tax identification number.
We hope the government will crash on such gross irregularity in tax collection. If the wealthy people pay their taxes properly, the poor people can get some respite. The government must reduce corruption from the taxes department as it is eating away a good chunk of revenue, and at the same time discouraging people from paying taxes. We hope the next budget will take positive steps to increase revenue collection and at the same time give mid-income group people the much needed relief.
