Gang rape of a Garo girl

The gang rape incident of a Garo woman has created widespread resentment across the country and people are shocked beyond measure. The incident should be thoroughly investigated and the culprits should be given exemplary punishment. At the same time, the victim should get full sympathy and cooperation and due compensation from the government. This kind of incident leaves a bad taste in our mouth and a damaging impact on the psyche of a woman. The whole society should stand up and join hands with the government in uncovering the crime and prevent recurrence of such incidents in future. It is heartening that some of the criminals involved have been detained by law enforcing agencies. We only hope that the remaining culprits shall also be apprehended and brought to justice. The media should launch a powerful campaign against rape and all kinds of sexual harassments. These are social disorders which must be eliminated at any cost. In the last fourteen years more than five thousand women lodged complains of rape with the authorities, but culprits were punished in only 43 cases.  There are many women who do not disclose such incidents as they feel they will be looked down upon in society. It is the responsibility of society to eradicate these evils. Let us make our country safe for women.
