Getting rid of impunity of the law enforcers
May 16, 2014 00:00:00
The elite law enforcing agency RAB (Rapid Action Battalion) has become a terrible nightmare for the common people. Its name has become synonymous with extra judicial killings, forced disappearances and abduction. The common people have lost their faith in this force. It has become a deadly weapon which is often misused by the ruling party. It is time that the government gave a serious thought on the continuation of this elite force, which was formed to fight against hardcore criminals. The opposition party leaders have demanded to disband the agency but will it solve our problem, i. e., the tendency of using law enforcing agency for gratifying partisan interests by the ruling party?
It is sad that RAB, which could have played an important role to establish peace and security in our society, is playing a role of Frankenstein and its name is being associated with all sorts of criminal activities. The country did not face such a disorderly state of governance in the past as it is facing now, causing unprecedented insecurity among its citizens all over the places. If the situation persists, we may have to experience the perils of a failed state in future.
In order to bring an end to the prevailing dread, the government has no choice but to wake up and bring the perpetrators to justice. It is high time we got rid of the culture of impunity of the law enforcers.
