As we learn from the media, the incident of gold smuggling is on the rise. It is creating curiosity in the mind of the common people. Our neighbouring country India, the world's largest consumer of gold, is also seeing a record rise in its smuggling, and possibility is very bright that this has a connection between rising gold smuggling in Bangladesh. Many believe that most of the gold which comes to Bangladesh is re-smuggled to India.
It seems Bangladesh is a favourite destination for gold smugglers and they have a very strong and powerful network. Due to high taxes on gold to India, the smugglers find it a very lucrative business. So the international smugglers, sensing the relaxed law and order situation of Bangladesh use it as a route to smuggle gold in India. The gold traffickers have an unholy alliance with a group of corrupt officials of police, customs, Biman and Civil Aviation. Smuggling is harming our economy. In order to prevent it, the country's international airports must be airtight, and the government officials who help smugglers must be identified and punished.
