LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Goodbye Interim Government

February 19, 2026 00:00:00

The interim government of Bangladesh, led by Nobel laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus, has marked a highly significant and memorable chapter in the nation's history. The eighteen-month interim administration carried the responsibility of maintaining public trust and ensuring continuity in governance during a critical juncture. As the nation moves forward, the contributions and experiences of this government will remain an important part of Bangladesh's evolving democratic history.

The interim government made sincere and dedicated efforts to restore stability, strengthen democratic values and steer the country responsibly through a crucial transitional period. The acting administration carried the responsibility of maintaining public trust and ensuring continuity in governance during a critical time.

One of its greatest achievements was enabling the nation to hold a long-awaited, peaceful, and credible election after many years, facilitated by constructive dialogue among political stakeholders. Despite the difficulties of a turbulent transition, the government deserves recognition for restoring the electoral system, promoting media freedom, ensuring the full separation of the judiciary, and initiating trials against those responsible for the July killings. Notably, the country witnessed a record remittance inflow of US$ 30.33 billion in the last fiscal year and successfully repaid around US$ 4 billion to foreign lenders in interest and principal.

Beyond these achievements, the nation's global image rose under the commendable leadership of the Nobel laureate.

We bid farewell to the interim government with a profound sense of gratitude and renewed hope. This chapter may now be closing, but the efforts, sacrifices, and commitment shown during this transitional period will not be forgotten. The interim leadership reminded us that even in times of turbulence, steady hands and sincere intentions can guide a nation forward.

The interim government of Bangladesh, led by the Nobel laureate Professor and his cabinet, will be remembered as a bridge between uncertainty and renewal. It helped steady the nation and left behind a foundation of hope for a vibrant democratic future.
