From January to May 2024, 201 women and children were raped, including 50 who have been gang-raped. Tragically, 9 victims died as a result, and 2 committed suicide. Additionally, 44 people were victims of attempted-rape and 17 boys were also victimised.
Despite these alarming statistics, society often blames women for their behaviour, dress, and movements for becoming rape victims. Yet, there are no answers to why old women over 80, 4-month-old infants, or students in Madrassas are being raped. What is their fault?
The government claims it has enacted laws against rape and gang rape, but these measures seem ineffective. The journey to justice is long and fraught with challenges, making it almost impossible for many victims and their families to endure.
Beyond legislation, the government's primary responsibility should be the protection of women and children. Law enforcement must be stringent enough to deter potential offenders. The current prevalence of rapists reflects that "zero tolerance" is merely a phrase.
Traumatised victims who report their assaults face harassment, which highlight the needs for a systemic change. This transformation should begin within families, where girls are often taught to be good, but boys receive a fraction of that guidance.
