Growing risks from plastic bottles

January 01, 2025 00:00:00

Widespread use of plastic bottles has significant impacts on both the environment and human health. According to a recent study, 3.15 billion to 3.84 billion plastic bottles are used annually in the country, with only 21.4 per cent being recycled. The remaining 78.6 per cent contribute to escalating plastic pollution. Plastic bottles can remain decomposed in the environment for up to 450 years, releasing microplastics and toxic chemicals into ecosystems and food chains over time. This has become a major health and environmental crisis.

A study by the Environment and Social Development Organization (ESDO) reveals that 83.6 per cent of the population uses plastic bottles daily. However, awareness of the health hazards associated with plastic bottles remains alarmingly low, with only 18.4 per cent of urban residents and 5.5 per cent of rural residents recognising the risks. Improper disposal of single-use plastic bottles exacerbates environmental degradation, as they are often discarded carelessly.

Stakeholders warn that plastic pollution, particularly from single-use bottles, poses a severe challenge to public health and the environment. Researchers highlight that harmful chemicals, such as bisphenol A (BPA) and microplastics released from these bottles, are entering the food chain, endangering human health and biodiversity.

To combat this crisis, it is crucial to reduce the use of plastic bottles, promote recyclable materials, and adopt eco-friendly alternatives. Raising awareness among both the government and the general public is essential to minimise plastic waste and enhance recycling systems. Use of cost-effective, environmentally friendly alternatives, such as reusable bottles, and implementation of stricter policies to curb production and consumption of plastic bottles are necessary.

By prioritising these measures, it is possible to mitigate the growing risks to health and the environment posed by plastic bottles.
