Guarding against HMPV infections

Five years after the COVID-19 pandemic, South Asian countries are witnessing a notable surge in human metapneumovirus (HMPV) infections in recent months. Cases have been rising in northern Chinese provinces this winter, particularly among children, according to local authorities. Kazakhstan has also reported 30 cases of the respiratory illness.
Global media outlets have reported that Malaysia detected 327 HMPV cases in 2024 and 225 cases in 2023. The Indian health ministry has so far confirmed the detection of five cases of HMPV during routine surveillance. In the United States, cases of HMPV have been steadily increasing since November 2024, with 1.94% of weekly tests positive for HMPV as of December 28.
Experts explain that HMPV is a respiratory virus causing flu-like symptoms and can also present symptoms similar to COVID-19. With reports suggesting the virus is spreading rapidly, the Bangladesh government should take proactive measures to address this issue.
The government should advise the public on preventive steps to curb the spread of the respiratory virus. People should be informed about the importance of frequent handwashing with soap, wearing face masks, and covering the mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing.
In particular, the government must establish testing facilities for the general population as soon as possible. Additionally, dissemination of accurate information from the authorities is crucial to preventing misinformation and spread of the disease.
