High blood sugar and male fertility

June 02, 2023 00:00:00

The number of male diabetic patients is increasing alarmingly in Bangladesh. According to experts, high blood sugar in diabetic men may lower their fertility. Recent studies have found that at least one in four men with diabetes may have a deficiency of testosterone, which is the main male sex hormone. The damaged nerves that diabetes causes can lead to conditions like retrograde ejaculation. We may also see abnormally low sperm count or mobility in men who do not manage their blood sugar.

So, it is important for young men with diabetes to be careful now. At the top of their to-do list, there must be a desire for controlling their sugar. The first step to diabetes management is a healthy diet and regular exercise. If this is not enough, one will probably need to take other measures such as regularly monitoring blood glucose levels, keeping weight and stress under control, monitoring oral medications and, if required, use insulin. If there is a nervous complication or obstruction of blood circulation, it should be treated as per the advice of a specialist physician.
