Holding a credible DUCSU election

Around the beginning of this year, the Supreme Court cleared the way for holding the Dhaka University Central Students' Union (DUCSU) election. The Dhaka University (DU) authorities were also asked to initiate all-out efforts that can ensure that the election is held properly. Accordingly the DU authorities have stepped up efforts to arrange an election within the stipulated time.
DUCSU is the apex body of DU students. It is known as the mini-parliament of Bangladesh and many high-ups of present and past governments were products of DUCSU. It played great roles during many historic events including the language movement, six-point movement, 1969 mass uprising and the liberation war.
But the last DUCSU election took place 28 years ago in 1990. Many DU alumni like me completed university life without getting the taste of DUCSU. It is really unfortunate and unexpected. Student organisations, especially the left-leaning ones, demanded the polls on numerous occasions and now the chance of holding the election is right on the doorstep.
The basic right of students is to practise creative politics and culture for future role in leadership positions.
Every former and present DU student expects a credible and inclusive DUCSU election. Such an election is considered a symbol of democracy and for this, a level playing field for active student organisations is vital.
The DU authorities should take effective steps to hold a credible and inclusive DUCSU election as per instructions from the apex court.
