It is heartening to learn that the Anti-corruption Commission (ACC) has finally moved into action against alleged corrupt politicians. Reports say the commission has formed an investigation committee to conduct inquiry into the information on wealth of seven former ministers and MPs who participated in the 10th general elections.
The nation was stunned to learn how, according to their own affidavit, the ruling party ministers and MPs were fattened with wealth which is only possible with the help of a magic lamp.
We are further happy to learn that the ACC will investigate into the assets of not only the alleged corrupt ministers and MPs, but also of those of their relatives. Experiences say the corrupt individuals acquire illegal assets not in their name only; rather they acquire properties in the names of their relatives, even sometimes in fictitious names. I hope the investigation officer will keep that in mind while conducting enquiry. We hope the investigations will go ahead in an objective manner, and the developments in the process will be made public through media as far as practicable. At the same time the commission should keep a watch on the investigation officers so that they are not managed or derailed.
We are further elated to hear the ACC secretary saying that the commission will not feel embarrassed to scrutinise the unusual increase in wealth of the ministers and MPs in the last five years even though they are very much powerful. It gives us the understanding that the ACC is no more 'a toothless tiger', it has grown teeth. It is now our turn to see how sharp ACC's teeth are.
