How tourism boosts economy

December 10, 2025 00:00:00

Tourism today, in Bangladesh and worldwide, is no longer just a matter of leisure, it is a powerful driver of economic growth. In developing countries, tourism generates a 'flow of income' that directly and indirectly increases employment, regional development, infrastructure expansion and foreign exchange earnings.

The direct economic impact of tourism is highly visible. Hotels, resorts, restaurants, transport services, guides and entertainment centres form an interconnected chain that benefits small and medium-sized businesses the most. Seasonal tourist hotspots such as Cox's Bazar, St. Martin's, Sylhet, and the Sundarbans witness growing employment opportunities. Each new visitor injects fresh money into the local economy, supporting livelihoods across the region.

Tourism also accelerates infrastructure development. Improved roads, security, electricity, internet facilities, and cleanliness not only enhance visitor experience but also raise the quality of life for local communities. The sector encourages entrepreneurship, increases land value, and expands employment.

Furthermore, tourism contributes significantly to foreign exchange.

Many countries thrive on tourism alone, and Bangladesh has similar potential with its islands, mountains, forests and coasts. What is needed is sustainable planning, secure environments and supportive policies.

However, to maintain this upward flow, challenges must be addressed. These include improving investment conditions, developing skilled human resources, promoting eco-friendly tourism and strict monitoring to ensure order in tourist areas. Without these measures, the sector's growth may be hindered.

Tourism is more than recreation-it is a strategic asset capable of revitalising the economy, even during crises. Recognising and supporting it as such can ensure long-term economic benefits for Bangladesh.
